Four fifths of all sensory information relayed to the brain is visual in origin. Eye and vision disorders have broad implications in health care because of their potential for disability, suffering and loss of productivity. Early detection and treatment of eye vision disorders are essential to full functional ability. The comprehensive adult eye and vision exam provides the means to evaluate the functioning of the eyes and vision system and to obtain information to diagnose the cause of any signs or symptoms reported by the patient. In addition it assists to rule out the presence of other ocular or systemic conditions that may exist without symptoms.

Blurred vision can result from many causes, ranging from uncorrected eye-sight errors to sight or life-threatening conditions (eg eye or brain tumours). In addition, potentially blinding conditions such as glaucoma or diabetic eye complications may cause no symptoms until they are far advanced and the damage irreparable.
